On 15 October 2016 we drew the trailer raffle under police supervision. The three lucky winners are local people,  but the greatest winner is our community, with all proceeds to be shared between the Papanui Rotary Children in Need Trust and the Christchurch Charity Hospital.  Our key partner for this project was  Mitre 10 Mega, whose willingness and generosity towards the community of Papanui has been tremendous.

At 10am on Friday 15 October the committee gathered in Verdi’s swanky office for the trailer raffle draw, in the presence of Wayne, Community Constable from Papanui Police. There was a sense of excitement, knowing that three lucky people were soon to win some amazing prizes.
We soon discovered that the old draw-a-number-from-the-barrel method is oh-so last century; instead, Wayne consulted Dr Google for a website that selects random numbers and typed in the range 1001 to 9000. The tension was palpable; after all, this a moment the team had been working towards for months. The computer thought for a nanosecond and selected the first wining number (for the trailer and its contents), Marcie Haskell of Bishopdale. Deryn found Marcie’s ticket butt, Verdi and Wayne completed the essential documentation and cameras whirled. The process was repeated for the second prize (the barbeque) and again for the third (the Mitre 10 Voucher); these went to Jo Fitchett of Casebrook and Gail Lyes of Rangiora respectively. Local people – how neat!
Verdi dialled each winner with the good news, but despite our itching to tell them, none of the three answered his calls. He managed to contact Jo and Gail that afternoon, but not Marcie.
It was a great thrill to connect with Marcie by phone during the morning tea break at conference the next day. She told us that she and her husband have bought a new car recently and had it fitted with a tow bar despite their not having a trailer, so it was meant to be!
While it is a delight to have three deserving prize winners, the greatest winner is our community, with 75% of the proceeds going to the Papanui Rotary Children in Need Trust and 25% to the Christchurch Charity Hospital. In addition, we have set up a great working partnership with Mitre 10 Mega and also with Allprint. Their support has been tremendous and we look forward to continuing these relationships in the future.
The prizes will be presented at 9am on Saturday 29 October, at Mitre 10 Mega in Harewood Road. Everyone is welcome to come along.
