More Adventures from the Holidaymaker
I am currently in Oregon USA with my brother Ross and sister-in-law Allison who live in Salem, the state capital of Oregon.
We visited the huge Rose Garden in Portland on our way from the airport to their home in Salem and came across the Rotary project of the Portland New Generations Club which was called Roses and Rosé 2026.
It was an impressive event, set up in the rose gardens with wine tastings, entertainment and food vendors. Admission was by ticket and activities included Rose Garden tours, lawn games as well as entertainment.
I was very warmly welcomed by some of the young Rotarians, and it was fantastic to see Rotary in action in Portland. One of the recipients of funds raised was Shelter Box, with a number of other local projects, many with an environmental focus.
It is very hot here in Salem, 35° yesterday but a bit cooler 32° today. There are heat warnings as well as air quality warnings as smoke from the wildfires north of us is drifting south. The last few days the warning has been not to be outside. Today the air seems a bit clearer.

General News
Last week we had Past District Governor David Drake, who is the chair of D9999 Awards committee, attend at the beginning of our meeting. He presented a 50 years of service in Rotary certificate to Gordon Shields which is a significant milestone.
Congratulations Gordon on demonstrating true service above self.
We also held our Special General Meeting to confirm the appointment of Trustees for the Papanui Rotary Incorporated Charitable Trust and the Papanui Children in Needs Trust.

Aroha Lawson was nominated by Lois Flanagan and this was seconded by Liz Courtney - vote passed unanimously.
Papanui Rotary Charitable Trust
Gary Brawley was nominated by Aroha Lawson and seconded by Treacy Ireland
Nick Courtney was nominated by SImon Forsyth and seconded by Tony Tizzard
They were both voted in unanimously - congratulations to all those nominated.
Papanui High School 90 Year Jubilee Rose Garden
David Boustead from the Otautahi Rotary Passport also joined us for our meeting to tell us about the above project. He explained the opportunity for our club to be involved in providing support to redevelop an existing garden and planting up to 100 - 120 roses in time for the school's celebration.
Papanui Rotary would be recognised with a plaque in the rose garden which is good for our club visibility. The school is also keen to have a Peace Pole installed in this garden too.
It would involve us in the following;
- Donate some funding to buy the roses
- Assist with the spreading of the soil mix
- Assist with planting the roses
This project will be discussed with members as it was on the projects list in our review.

Non Rotary Events
Days for Girls is a volunteer project that makes reusable menstrual health kits, helping girls and women stay at school, work, and daily activities with dignity during their period.
The kits are distributed throughout New Zealand, the Pacific, and around the world, together with menstrual and sexual health education. Local women are also trained to make the kits and deliver the education programme in their own communities.
If you'd like to get involved, our next working bees is Saturday 24 October.

Papanui Bush Working Bee
Join us on the second Tuesday of each month, 9:00am–12:00pm, at the picnic table by the big oak tree near the BrainTree Wellness Centre, 70 Langdons Road.
Bring gardening gloves, gumboots, and a kneeler if you'd like. Morning tea is at 10:30am—stay for as little or as long as you can.
